We have seen so much of Japan! - we visited (as it shows in red on the map):
Tokyo (3 days)
Sapporo (3 days including a day trip to Otaru)
Fukuoka (3 days including day trips to Nagasaki and Kumamoto)
Hiroshima (2 days including a day trip to Miyajima Island)
Osaka (2 days)
Kyoto (3 days including a day trip to Nara)
Atami (2 days including a day trip to Gotemba near Mount Fuji)

Some facts about Japan:
  • Japanese people are wonderful people: respectful, peaceful and helpful. We didn't see any violent or drunken Japanese people in the streets
  • Japan is inexpensive if you don't mind eating in bars or inexpensive restaurants
  • Japanese cities are very modern and have little historical parts like cities in Europe, the architecture is very different. There are some nice traditional houses but not as many as we thought are left
  • Japanese castles are the main tourist attraction and they look like huge temples
  • The infrastructure is very good in Japan, trains that are always on time, there is an efficient tube system, good tourists information points, great toilets, excellent organisation of everything
  • Travelling was stress-free and we didn't feel that we had to be especially careful of pickpockets and thieves
  • Cars in Japan are new, you can't really see any old cars. This is because people have to pay high tax if they own an old car, and also because new Japanese cars are cheap
  • Some Japanese wear masks on their faces, this means that they are ill and don't want to spread any germs - so considerate! It can also mean that they are allergic to pollen and they protect themselves
  • If we were to advise somebody on what to visit in Japan, we would say less cities, more Fuji area, and maybe the tropical Okinawa Island that we didn’t have time to visit.
