In the evening we met Fausto's friend, Sunaina. She is originally from New Delhi, India. She used to live in London where she met Fausto, and now she has been living in Colombo for 4 years. She is a very intelligent young elite Indian woman, and she told us a lot of stories about India and Sri Lanka. I was interested to hear about men - women relationships in New Delhi and Sri Lanka and I was surprised how modern some people are. Sunaina is also a founder of a charity that saves animals, mainly dogs. She said that Sri Lanka is a very charitable country. For example, people who can afford it, cook a lot of rice and curry, they put it in boxes and give to the poorest. They feed animals too.
We had a drive in Sunaina’s car and we were able to see how many decorations some expensive hotels put up, the whole Colombo is illuminated because of the decorations. It looks fantastic. Apparently the city puts up the decorations four times a year, to celebrate Buddhist, Christian, Hindu and Muslim holy days. It’s great that people of all these religions seemingly live peacefully on the island, it would be a good example for others to follow in other parts of the world.
In the pictures: with Sunaina in the centre of Colombo.
