Mexico City

We arrived in Mexico City on 27th December at 22:10.
The city is situated on 2,250 meters above the sea level so it was cold but not too bad, about 14 degrees Celsius. We took an Uber taxi to the house of our Couchsurfing host Simja who lives in the southern part of the city, near San Angel. She lives in a big beautiful Mexican-style house, and she has some spare rooms that she uses for guests. We arrived a day earlier because I got confused with the time zones! However Simja didn't say anything, she just opened the door, welcomed us, and a couple of days later I realised that we had arrived a day earlier! But she was ok with it.
The next day we had a good chat during breakfast (Simja made delicious pancakes for us). I found out where the word "gringo" comes from... "green go" shouted at the American soldiers in green uniforms.

We went to the city centre and visited the main square: Plaza de la Constitución - the common name is The Zócalo, previously called the "Main Square" or "Arms Square". Prior to the colonial period, it was the main ceremonial centre in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan.
The Zocalo is surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, the Historic City Hall and the Government Building. In the centre there is a huge flag. On 15th September the Mexican Independence is remembered here. We visited the Cathedral, the Templo Mayor (the best known of all the Aztec sites in the city) which is next to it and the old town with many street vendors.
