On Thursday 23rd May a German bomb from the Second World War was found in our street in Kingston, close to our house. All the people in the street were evacuated straight away, and later even more people from the streets nearby.
We were told we may not be able to return home for three days. Luckily the bomb was detonated on site after 5 pm on 24th May and we could sleep at home again. After the detonation some windows in the streets were broken, mainly single-glazed windows. I learned that the glass will not break if the windows are left open.
It was a very unusual experience and a scary one. I wonder how many bombs there still are under our homes; the total number of highly explosive bombs dropped from 7th October 1940 to 6th June 1941 in Kingston was 447...
