Yesterday, 3 October, I arrived in La Spezia, a town situated near Cinque Terre National Park. I wanted to come here for a long time, so I was very happy that I finally made it happen. I arrived late, I had to walk through the town from the train station to my accommodation, and I could see how beautiful the town was.
This morning I took a bus to Porto Venere, a starting point for the national park. My intention was to walk from there to Riomaggiore, which is the first village of Cinque Terre (or last one when travelling from the north). And I did indeed, but instead of taking the easier Blue Trail I took the Red Trail by mistake.
I hiked for over 7 hours and it was very tiring, up and down the mountains all the time. The trail is dangerous at many points and there are many steep ascents. The flies and mosquitos were sitting on me and biting as soon as I stopped walking, so I didn't rest much. Luckily I had lunch with me, which I had to eat very quickly (or being eaten by mosquitos). But I made it, and many people on the short trails were surprised that I was hiking such a long distance.
The walk started in Porto Venere, I walked to a small village Campiglia Tramonti, then to a tiny village Telegrafo, then a sharp and painful descent to Riomaggiore. At one point I was confused where to go and I saw a man walking. I asked him if he knew where Telegrafo was, and he thought I wanted to send a fax :))))
Also, 10 minutes before Telegrafo I was really struggling, as it was another ascent, on an asphalt road. A car passed and the man behind the wheel stopped without me stopping him, and gave me a lift to Telegrafo, all the way up. I told him that sometimes in your life someone appears when you really struggle and helps you, and his small gesture meant so much to me. Great adventure, but I got to the accommodation in La Spezia completely exhausted.
