The next day I did a long hike to Glaciar Marcial. I took the red trail and climbed all the way to the snow areas. On the way back I hitch hiked as I was too tired to walk, and I arrived in Belen's house absolutely exhausted. I think this hike was one of the best and most enjoyable I have done in a long time. I hiked on my own so I could take breaks when I wanted, and observe the mountains whenever I wanted. I am very proud of myself for doing this hike.
When I came back, I went to the supermarket, had a quick dinner and went to a local café to meet Andrés, a guy from Couchsurfing. He couldn't host me, so I suggested we meet for a chat. We spent a couple of hours talking, he is a very interesting person, very active in Couchsurfing, and he told me many interesting stories about his work in Antarctica. He works as a kind of Meteorology Officer in the Ushuaia airport, monitoring the winds and the weather conditions for the flights. He was working in Antarctica for 4 months and he told me that there is a high risk of death due to its extreme and unpredictable weather, lack of infrastructure, and accidents like falls into crevasses (open cracks in glaciers).
People used to earn a lot of money working there because of the risk of death, and after a year of work they were able to buy a house in Ushuaia. Now the money is not so good anymore, but still much better than working in Ushuaia.
