We decided to travel to an island called Koh Lanta, to get there we have to get to Surat Thani by train and then to Krabi by bus and from Krabi by ferry to Koh Lanta.
Bangkok - Surat Thani: 12 hours journey time, 530 km, the price for a first class sleeper on an overnight train cost £47 for both of us. We had a small cabin for ourselves and the beds were comfortable, we were lucky as there was a cancellation after we were initially told that first class was sold out and we had to sleep in a second class carriage with 40 other people. The only problems we had were the train frequently breaking suddenly which was waking us up and the noise from the announcements at every station where the train stopped throughout the night. When we got off the train we didn't want to be ripped off by people organising trips to Krabi and waiting for travellers outside of Surat Thani station. We got on an old local bus without air conditioning that was going to the bus station that turned out to be 14 km away. Then we got on another bus going to Krabi and it took about 4 hours as the driver was picking up and delivering parcels at the same time. We got to Krabi exhausted and what's more, the driver put a bag of fish in the luggage compartment and it leaked so our bags had this awful smell of fish. In Krabi we took a minibus that was crossing the strait on a ferry and it took other 3 hours to get to our hotel. At least the driver dropped us right there.
