Then we went to the Gateway of India, the most popular tourist attraction. It is the icon of the city of Mumbai and a reminder of its’ rich colonial history as Bombay. It was built to celebrate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India for their formal proclamation as Emperor and Empress of India.

Why the name changed from Bombay to Mumbai
The renaming of cities in India started in 1947 following the end of the British imperial period.
The city’s official name change, from Bombay to Mumbai happened when regional political party Shiv Sena came into power in 1995. The Shiv Sena saw Bombay as a legacy of British colonialism and wanted the city’s name to reflect its Maratha heritage, hence renaming it to pay tribute to the goddess Mumbadevi. The name change wasn’t a singular incident specific to Mumbai. It is part of a larger, ongoing wave where places across India have undergone name changes often to remove the names given by the British.
