Today, 17 January, is our last day in Vietnam. In the morning we went to the famous Ben Thanh Market where I wanted to buy Robusta coffee but the sellers were too pushy and became angry because I didn't buy the coffee. The market was nothing special to be honest.
After that we visited the Post Office which is a very nice building in the Gothic style. It was designed by Alfred Foulhoux, but is often credited as the work of Gustave Eiffel. According to tour guides and some websites many bridges and buildings in Vietnam were designed by Eiffel but it's probably not true.
Then we went to the Independence Palace which is an amazing place, mainly because it's cool, quiet, well maintained and pleasant, and we learned some history too.
Independence Palace also known as Reunification Palace witnessed many significant historical events, especially a rise and fall of three presidents of Southern Vietnam. On April 30, 1975, a Vietnamese army tank crashed through the palace’s gates, creating the way for Communist forces to occupy it. This was the end of the Vietnam War.
There are two original tanks parked in the grounds. The Palace has lush gardens, secret rooms, antique furniture, and a command bunker. It's still in use to host important occasions in Ho Chi Minh, including Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and it's considered the symbol of Vietnam national independence.
